The requirements of this division establish a minimum tree standard for certain land
developments which are expressed in terms of "tree density units" rather than the
number of trees. One "tree density unit" is not the same as one "tree." This approach
provides the developer with wide latitude of choice as to the number, species, and
size of trees to be planted, and their distribution following aesthetic landscaping
practices, while achieving a common standard for all properties with like land uses.
The value of replacement trees (i.e., tree density units recognized) increases as
the size of the tree increases, thereby encouraging the installation of larger replacement
trees. The value of existing trees also increases as the size of tree increases, thereby
encouraging the retention of larger existing trees.
